In brief

How do Le Pen and Mélenchon differ?

Marine Le Pen (Rassemblement National) and Jean-Luc Mélenchon (La France Insoumise) disagree on more test statements than they agree on, among those where both have a sourced position, but they share many positions on social policy and institutions. Both want the legal retirement age to go back to 62 or lower, all pensions to rise at least in line with inflation, the 35-hour week to stay, VAT on electricity, gas and motor fuel to be cut, a wealth tax to be brought back and a large increase in funding for public hospitals; both oppose paying unemployment benefits for a shorter time. They also want to give French law precedence over European law, leave NATO’s integrated command, scrap low-emission zones, elect members of the National Assembly by proportional representation and create a citizens’ initiative referendum (RIC). They are opposed on immigration: Le Pen wants to abolish birthright citizenship and suspend family reunification, and opposes legal status for undocumented workers and keeping State medical aid (AME), while Mélenchon takes the opposite view. They also differ on energy, as she wants new nuclear reactors and no further wind power and he takes the opposite view; on a presumption of self-defence for police officers, compulsory school uniform and banning girls under 18 from wearing the headscarf in public spaces, which she supports; and on legalising cannabis, assisted dying and a minimum wage of at least 1,600 euros a month after deductions, which he supports.

This summary is based on the candidates’ documented positions on the test statements; the source of each position is on each candidate’s page. Updated 19/10/2026.

Differences

Where they clash most

Immigration

Birthright citizenship (“droit du sol”) should be abolished.

Le Pen Strongly in favour
The RN's 2024 programme includes abolishing birthright citizenship, as did her 2022 programme, which limited nationality to naturalisation alone.
Mélenchon Strongly against
His programme proposes to "guarantee full birthright citizenship to all children born in France, restore it throughout the national territory and make French nationality easier to obtain".

Immigration

Undocumented workers who have a job should be given legal status.

Le Pen Strongly against
The RN's 2024 programme would suspend all regularisations of undocumented migrants by prefects and toughen penalties on those who employ them.
Mélenchon Strongly in favour
His programme proposes to "regularise workers, students and parents of schoolchildren" and make the ten-year residence card the standard permit.

Immigration

Undocumented migrants should keep access to State medical aid (AME).

Le Pen Strongly against
Her group's 2025 counter-budget replaces State Medical Aid (AME) for undocumented migrants with emergency-only care; the RN's 2024 programme already planned this.
Mélenchon Strongly in favour
His programme proposes to "guarantee access to State Medical Aid (AME)" for undocumented foreigners.

Security and justice

Police officers and gendarmes should be presumed to have acted in self-defence.

Le Pen Strongly in favour
In July 2026 she voted for the bill granting police and gendarmes a presumption of self-defence, a measure already in her 2022 programme.
Mélenchon Strongly against
In 2026 his group voted against a presumption of self-defence for police, and his programme would repeal the 2017 law on police use of weapons, which it calls a "licence to kill".

Education and youth

School uniform should be compulsory in primary and lower secondary school.

Le Pen Strongly in favour
Her 2022 programme proposes introducing school uniforms in primary and lower secondary schools to restore the authority of schools.
Mélenchon Strongly against
His programme proposes to "suspend the school uniform trial".

Energy, climate and farming

France should build new nuclear reactors.

Le Pen Strongly in favour
The RN's 2024 programme, a continuation of her 2022 one, proposes the 'Marie Curie plan' to relaunch nuclear power with new EPR and small modular reactors.
Mélenchon Strongly against
His programme proposes to "phase out nuclear power: abandon the EPR reactor projects" and plan the dismantling and conversion of nuclear sites.
