In brief

How do Le Pen and Attal differ?

Marine Le Pen (Rassemblement National) and Gabriel Attal (Renaissance) disagree on more test statements than they agree on, among those where both have a sourced position. Le Pen wants the legal retirement age to go back to 62 or lower, all pensions to rise at least in line with inflation, the 35-hour week to stay, VAT on electricity, gas and motor fuel to be cut and a wealth tax to be brought back, which Attal rejects; he, on the other hand, supports paying unemployment benefits for a shorter time, which she opposes. She wants to abolish birthright citizenship, suspend family reunification and scrap low-emission zones, which he opposes. On Europe and defence, she wants French law to take precedence over European law and France to leave NATO’s integrated command; he wants the European Union to take more decisions by majority and France to offer to extend its nuclear deterrent to European partners, and each rejects the other’s positions. They agree on cutting public spending before raising taxes, funding part of pensions through invested savings, new nuclear reactors, higher military spending, a presumption of self-defence for police officers and banning girls under 18 from wearing the headscarf in public spaces; both reject raising the retirement age to 65, legal status for undocumented workers and leaving the European Union.

Differences

Where they clash most

Pensions

The legal retirement age should go back to 62 or lower.

Le Pen Strongly in favour
According to LCP, in her September 2026 speech in Hénin-Beaumont she called for a return to a legal retirement age of 62, and 60 for those who started work before 20.
Attal Strongly against
He opposed suspending the 2023 reform and wants its timetable resumed; in the longer run he proposes scrapping the legal age in favour of contribution length only.

Economy, taxes and debt

A wealth tax should be brought back.

Le Pen In favour
Her group's 2025 counter-budget proposes a tax on financial wealth (IFF) in place of the property wealth tax (IFI); it does not bring back the old ISF as it was.
Attal Strongly against
At the Medef debate in August 2026, he defended the abolition of the wealth tax (ISF) decided after 2017 and rejected any return to it.

Work and cost of living

VAT on electricity, gas and motor fuel should be cut.

Le Pen Strongly in favour
In September 2026 she called for a VAT cut on motor fuel; the RN's 2025 counter-budget cuts VAT on gas, electricity and motor fuel.
Attal Against
Faced with rising fuel prices in 2026, he backed targeted aid for working people, saying a general tax cut mainly benefits the wealthiest.

Immigration

Birthright citizenship (“droit du sol”) should be abolished.

Le Pen Strongly in favour
The RN's 2024 programme includes abolishing birthright citizenship, as did her 2022 programme, which limited nationality to naturalisation alone.
Attal Against
His party, in the 2025 convention he prefaced, rejects abolishing birthright citizenship in mainland France; as an MP he voted to restrict it in Mayotte in 2025.

Immigration

Social housing and jobs should go to French citizens first.

Le Pen Strongly in favour
Her 2022 programme proposes 'national priority' for French citizens in access to social housing and jobs; the RN's 2024 programme keeps it, by referendum if needed.
Attal Against
Estimated position: he contrasts his "work preference" with the RN line, rejects any ethnicisation of debate, and his party defends equal access to jobs and housing.

Energy, climate and farming

Wind power should continue to be developed.

Le Pen Strongly against
Her 2022 programme proposes halting wind power projects and gradually dismantling existing wind farms.
Attal In favour
He backs speeding up renewables alongside nuclear power, on a technology-neutral basis; his party wants higher offshore wind targets.
