In brief

How do Attal and Glucksmann differ?

Gabriel Attal (Renaissance) and Raphaël Glucksmann (Place Publique) share most of their positions on Europe and defence but are opposed on the economy and social policy. Both want the European Union to take more decisions by majority, to keep giving military aid to Ukraine, to increase military spending, to offer to extend the nuclear deterrent to European partners and to introduce compulsory national service. They support both new nuclear reactors and wind power, banning social media for children under 15 and keeping the 2026 assisted dying law, and both oppose abolishing birthright citizenship and raising the retirement age to 65. Glucksmann, however, supports a minimum tax of 2% on fortunes above 100 million euros, bringing back a wealth tax, going back to a retirement age of 62 or lower, a minimum wage of at least 1,600 euros a month after deductions and legal status for undocumented workers who have a job, all of which Attal rejects. Attal wants to cut public spending first, reduce the number of public servants and pay unemployment benefits for a shorter time, which Glucksmann rejects. They also differ on banning girls under 18 from wearing the headscarf in public spaces, which Attal supports and Glucksmann rejects.

Differences

Where they clash most

Economy, taxes and debt

To reduce the deficit, public spending should be cut first, rather than raising taxes.

Attal Strongly in favour
His 2026 plan sets out €150bn in savings and rules out any tax rise during his term: savings must come first, before any new taxes.
Glucksmann Against
His party's 2026 programme relies on a mix of targeted savings and new revenue, including a tax effort on the largest fortunes, and openly embraces renewed public investment.

Economy, taxes and debt

The number of public servants should be reduced.

Attal Strongly in favour
His plan would cut 100,000 civil service posts through voluntary departures with a bonus, sparing education, the armed forces, justice and the interior.
Glucksmann Against
His party's 2026 programme proposes recruiting public servants where needs are most acute and objects to public services being treated 'as a burden to be cut'.

Economy, taxes and debt

A wealth tax should be brought back.

Attal Strongly against
At the Medef debate in August 2026, he defended the abolition of the wealth tax (ISF) decided after 2017 and rejected any return to it.
Glucksmann In favour
His party's 2026 programme plans a 'new tax effort' on very large fortunes; he backs a minimum tax on the largest fortunes, without mentioning bringing back the old wealth tax (ISF).

Pensions

The legal retirement age should go back to 62 or lower.

Attal Strongly against
He opposed suspending the 2023 reform and wants its timetable resumed; in the longer run he proposes scrapping the legal age in favour of contribution length only.
Glucksmann In favour
His party's 2026 programme proposes repealing the 2023 reform (which raised the age to 64), then a new reform where some could retire at 60 and others would work longer.

Pensions

Part of pensions should be funded by invested savings (a funded pillar).

Attal Strongly in favour
He wants to introduce a genuine funded (capitalisation) pillar into the pension system and channel part of employee savings into it.
Glucksmann Against
Estimated position: his party's programme calls the pay-as-you-go pension system a 'national treasure' it pledges to preserve, and does not mention funded pensions.

Work and cost of living

The minimum wage (SMIC) should be raised to at least 1,600 euros a month after deductions.

Attal Against
To raise pay he prefers cutting employee social contributions and rejects any rise in labour costs; he does not propose raising the minimum wage by law.
Glucksmann Strongly in favour
His party's 2026 programme proposes raising the minimum wage (SMIC) to 1,600 euros net within two years of taking office.
